    Lineage Monster Encyclopedia | Griffon

Human beings feel fear when watching something special, weird, or unreal. Monsters are created based on such intense feeling of fear combined with human creativity. Both in eastern and western part of the world, monsters are expressed in various forms depending on their culture, environment, etc.

According to the dictionary, monster is an imaginary creature that is typically large, ugly, and frightening. In games, they are antagonistic NPCs that players should defeat. Players should beat them to get compensations like experiences, items, and completed quests, mostly in RPGs. Based on the game’s world view, monsters have a name, tribe, occupation, or gender like characters. Also, depending on their level of capability and difficulty, they are classified as a common, elite, or boss monster. In game 〈Mud 1〉 developed in 1978, the term ‘MobMobile object’ that is now commonly used was first introduced. Mobs are generally used in a similar meaning to monsters, and they sometimes also indicate antagonistic human NPCs, depending on their value, faction, clout, etc.

In Lineage Monster Encyclopedia, we have included mostly the monsters that the readers would feel familiar with through myths, legends, fantasy novels, and movies and are interpreted through 〈Lineage Remaster〉, 〈Lineage M〉, and 〈Lineage W〉. (However, human NPCs that were also included in the mobs were excluded.)

    Griffon

    #Animal type

Griffons are also called Griffins. Relics depicting Griffons were discovered in various regions including Egypt, and Griffons also appear in Greek and Roman myths. In the past, they would appear as a creature combined with an alligator, instead of a lion. However, its form is now almost standardized, and its upper part of the body resembles that of an eagle and lower part a lion.

    Griffon in popular culture

Game 〈World of Warcraft〉: In 〈World of Warcraft〉, vehicles are used to travel between cities within the same continent; ‘Gryphons’ are used as vehicles for the Alliance faction. (For the Horde, it is “Wyvern”.)

Movie 〈The Chronicles of Narnia〉 series: In the movie, ‘Gryphons’ play an important role in various ways, including attacking enemies through dumping rocks, carrying out scout activities, and carrying and moving people around.

TV animation 〈My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic〉: In the fifth episode of Season 1, “Griffon the Brush-off”, Rainbow Dash explains to Pinkie Pie that Gilda is a Griffon and that she is “a half eagle and a half lion”.

    Griffon in Lineage

In Lineage series, Griffons are depicted in slightly different versions. In 〈Lineage Remaster〉 and 〈Lineage M〉, Griffon’s lower part of the body including its four legs is covered with fur like a lion, while its face, upper part of the body, and wings resemble those of an eagle. In 〈Lineage W〉, Griffons look the same as those in other Lineage series in the way that their upper part of the body and head look like those of a lion. However, their four legs are those of an eagle, and long and sharp claws are attached to them.
